Beauty + utility. Passion + profit. Aesthetic + economic. ART + COMMERCE. Combining modern digital design with a deep understanding of your freelance or small business needs to make small, custom, static websites that look great and get results.

Work

Nigel Moyes

UX research, strategy and content isn't always the most visually engaging portfolio work to showcase. So we created a bold identity with a lot of movement, surprise and fine interaction to help promote Nigel's work.

Alberto Semo

Combining minimalism, a strict grid layout, and subtle yet pleasing interactions, we put Alberto's photography front and centre. Exactly where it should be.

Services

We offer a simple end to end solution where we discover you and your audience's needs, strategise the best way to satisfy them, design experiences that truly make an impact, and deliver an engaging, responsive and performant final product. Alternatively, you can leverage any of our services individually to augment a project underway with another party.

Development

Know (and delight) your audience

No matter how much you and I think we know about your audience, nothing will ever beat actually observing and talking to them to understand their needs, wants, emotions, behaviours, expectations and interactions.

To achieve the ideal user experience, we recommend user research and testing activities to gather insights and identify opportunities to make the greatest impact on their lives, before and after proceeding with design and development.

Once these insights have been gathered, we turn our focus to planning the holistic experience of your web presence through information architecture, wireframing and more.

Create experiences they'll remember

Once wireframes are approved, we move into applying your organisation’s brand look and feel to detail the user experience in full and gorgeous fidelity.

We'll consult closely with you to understand the design elements and interactions that most closely align to your brand. At no point will you be "locked out" of the design process. This is your baby, we want you to see it grow.

We deliver this for your review through a design feedback tool called Figma. Not only does this allow you to review the experience in your browser and comment directly on the designs, you can actually watch us as we build the experience from the ground up.

Use their language

Almost every website exists purely to deliver content, so no amount of jaw-dropping design or eye-catching animation can cover up poor content.

Whether you're selling a product, promoting an event, showcasing your creative work, or trying to build a loyal following — you're going to need well-written, persuasive and engaging copy and professionally produced photography and graphic assets to support your objectives.

We offer a full content strategy and copywriting service. So we won't just create compelling content for your website, we'll also document how we did it for you so you can carry on with it in future.

Make it. Simple.

We develop small, simple, no fuss static websites using HTML, CSS and Javascript. No CMS (coming soon), no eCommerce (also coming soon) and no hassle (available now!).

Our sites are responsive, accessible, search engine optimised and performant. In fact, this website performs so well in Google's "lighthouse" website testing platform that the browser shoots confetti.

Our tight integration of UX, Design and Development means that we're constantly fiddling with the finer details and interactions, because we know that it's in those details that your audience will find the greatest joy (whether they're aware of it or not).

About

"Design is equal parts art and commerce... Design seeks to create experiences in addition to being profitable, so the price and profit of the work represent only part of its value. I think the most fitting way to think about the best works of design are as gifts."

Frank ChimeroThe Shape of Design

Let's start from the beginning

Art and Commerce Digital is (currently) the freelance side-hustle of Nigel Moyes (g'day!). I've been working in user experience and content strategy for over 10 years, helping companies like Officeworks, Metricon Homes, Crown Hotels, The Movember Foundation and many others reach, delight, and sell to their audiences. I'm currently the User Experience Lead at Tundra in Fitzroy, one of Melbourne's best digital agencies.

After studying design and development for a year (in an attempt to stop myself from going crazy during the coronavirus pandemic) I started Art and Commerce. Well, the exact moment I started it was immediately after finishing Frank Chimero's 'The Shape of Design' in an evening over a bottle of red.

I'd always loved the theory and creative expression of design, as well as the fascinating contradiction between coding's strict precision and its endless flexibility. Frank's inspiration, and the skills and support I'd gained from a year of SuperHi courses, gave me the confidence to take the next step into freelance territory.

So, after conquering the fundamentals during that dumpster fire of a year, I decided to open up the My First Side Hustle® playset and start a small business creating small static websites for local creatives, entrepeneurs, venues, anyone!

Inspired by the transparency and helpfulness of HAWRAF and many others like them, I plan to run this business in the open, publishing the lessons I learn as I experience them.

So, here we are. This is going to be fun.

Art + Commerce specialise in small static websites

Think creative portfolios, marketing campaign landing pages, event or festival microsites, band websites, or a small business website just like this one. If you need something along those lines, we're the studio for you.

We won't just design and build any old website, we'll take the time to properly understand your goals so we design and build the right website — and you won't have to pay us with your first-born and a six-pack for it like you will with a larger agency because our sites are purposely less complex and we have fewer overheads.

You can also utilise our skills in UX, content, design, development, or project management on their own, to help you bring your existing project to life in any way we can. So if you've already got a developer but need some design, or already have a design but need some content, we can still help.

If you need a website where you can manage and update the content regularly via a content management system (e.g. blogs) or an eCommerce site where you can stock and sell products, keep an eye out for the second half of 2021. We don't currently offer these services, but will be adding them to our offering soon.

We get it, it can be hard to know where to begin

If you haven't taken on a web project before, we know it can be a little tricky and overwhelming to understand where to begin. So, even if you're not sure what you need or don't know if we're the right fit, we'd still be glad to help you figure it out. So don't be afraid, and fill in our contact form. We're not going to spam you with newsletters because we don't have time to write one.

In the spirit of reconciliation, Art + Commerce acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People of the Kulin Nation, Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work.
